Mathematics
Michele Emmer (b. Milano, 1945), a mathematician, author and filmmaker, is a full professor of mathematics at the University of Rome La Sapienza. Son of the famous director Luciano Emmer, he has been involved with cinema since childhood. He has produced 18 films in the “Arte e matematica” series, including one on Escher and one on Veronesi. Always keenly interested in the relationship between art and maths, he has written books, articles, and organized exhibitions and conferences on the theme. He won the Premio Viareggio award in 2010 with his essay “Bolle di sapone tra arte e matematica”, and writes for L’Unità, La Stampa, Il Manifesto, Galileo, and Sapere. Since 1997, he has organized the Matematica e cultura conference at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and in 1997 won the Galileo Galilei literary prize for popular science. His studies have dealt with minimal surfaces and the calculation of variations, computer graphics, the relationship between mathematics and art, and the relationship between mathematics and culture.
